Hair loss affects millions of people, yet many don't realize that "hair loss" isn't a single condition — it's a broad category that encompasses several distinct types, each with different causes, patterns, and treatment approaches.
Androgenetic Alopecia
The most common form of hair loss, androgenetic alopecia is a hereditary condition driven by hormonal factors. In men, it typically presents as receding hairline and crown thinning. In women, it usually appears as diffuse thinning across the top of the scalp while maintaining the frontal hairline. This type of hair loss responds well to early intervention with treatments like PRP therapy.
Telogen Effluvium
This type of hair loss occurs when a large number of hair follicles are pushed into the resting (telogen) phase simultaneously, usually triggered by physical or emotional stress, hormonal changes, nutritional deficiencies, or certain medications. The good news is that telogen effluvium is typically temporary, and hair often recovers once the triggering factor is addressed.
Alopecia Areata
An autoimmune condition where the immune system mistakenly attacks hair follicles, causing patchy hair loss that can occur anywhere on the body. The severity varies widely — from small, coin-sized patches to more extensive involvement.
Traction Alopecia
Caused by repeated mechanical stress on hair follicles — tight hairstyles, extensions, or chronic pulling. When caught early, the damage can be reversed. Over time, however, repeated traction can cause permanent follicle damage.
Getting the Right Diagnosis
Effective treatment starts with accurate diagnosis. At PH Med, Dr. Bui evaluates the scalp comprehensively — examining hair density, follicle health, and patterns of loss to determine the underlying type and design an appropriate treatment plan.
